NIA makes good on promise for a better learning environment

CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (JANUARY 15, 2008) -- Students of the Charlestown Primary School now have the comfort of two additional classrooms that were constructed to ease overcrowding at the school. The rooms were funded by the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation at a cost of $135,000.
Minister of Housing and Land Development and Area Representative for the St. Paul’s Constituency, Hon. Robelto Hector, said during a visit to the school on Monday January 14, 2007, that when the government assumed office in 2006, it became aware of the problem that had existed at the institution and had moved swiftly to address the situation.
“We realised what the problem was at the Charlestown Primary School. The problem of overcrowding which would affect your learning and I am happy that within a short time we were able to provide these two additional classrooms to help you in your learning process. I am happy that the government together with the Land and Housing Cooperation was able to solve that problem.
“I want you to cherish this building! I am still not easy with the fact that your morning worship is done in the open air, now that we have delivered on the classroom I can say to you that the plan is there for the auditorium and we are working hard to make sure that that is realised. I ask for you patience and I ask for your understanding because I know you have heard this over and over again but we are committed, this government is committed,” he said.

The two new classrooms are located at the Eastern corner of the school compound adjacent to the Ramsbury Recreation Grounds and will accommodate the students from grades 4 and 6.
School Chaplain, Father Neil of the Roman Catholic faith blessed the building and wished the school success in its endeavors.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Joseph Wiltshire encouraged the students to keep the classrooms tidy. He also used the opportunity on behalf of the Ministry of Education to thank the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation (NHLDC) who made the funds available for construction of the additional classrooms.
He further thanked the Headmistress, Mrs. Alice Swanston and her staff for their patience and also had high praise for Mr. James Williams who he said had done a marvelous job at constructing the building.
Escorted by Headmistress, Mrs. Alice Swanston, Minister Hector accompanied by Mr. Wiltshire, students and teachers entered the new facility.
