Charlestown Nevis (February 2, 2004) -- The St. Christopher and Nevis Social Security Board is observing its 26th anniversary and the Nevis branch office has mounted a five-day material culture exhibition, which opened to the public Monday morning, upstairs their Chapel Street office in Charlestown.
Manager of the Nevis office, Mr Curtis Morton, noted that while last year’s anniversary was a ‘big splash’, “this year it is a little bit low keyed, but we are still having some of the regular activities. For instance we are having our exhibition today and the exhibition is in conjunction with the Black History Month.”
Highlight of the exhibition is the display of an original bottle still with its contents intact, of a beverage that used to be produced on Nevis until 1989, when the factory which was situated at Farms Estate where the offices of Delisle Walwyn and Company Limited stand today was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo.
The bottle of Ju-C Beverages made by Bottlers Limited Nevis, has a rusty cap protecting the 10 fl oz of juice still in it, and according to Mr Morton, he salvaged it from the house of an elderly person who recently died, as his family members were about to throw the bottle away.
“We had a juice factory here in Nevis many years ago and a lot of the students who are going to school now would have probably only heard about such and we have got one of the original bottles,” observed Mr Morton, who promised that at the end of the exhibition on Friday he would donate the bottle and its contents to the Museum.
He explained that in this year’s exhibition, they have incorporated historical data on persons who would have significantly impacted the Nevis branch office of Social Security, among them Mr Ivor Stephens, a former Director of Social Security and politician and for whom the Nevis Social Security office building is named.
Other profiles include those of the current assistant director Mr Vernel Powell, and manager Mr Curtis Ethan Morton. Pictures of the staff members have been posted as well.
The exhibition this year also includes work by the clothing and textiles department of the Gingerland Secondary School under Ms Gillian André, art and craft from local material by Dr Patricia Bartlette-Powell, drawings by Nevisian artist Mr Vaughn Anslyn and food preserves by Mrs Olvis Dyer.
Activities already held to mark the anniversary include a church service that was held Sunday February 1 at the Ebenezer Church of God in Gingerland, a domino match also on Sunday where Social Security beat their seasoned counterparts at the Nevis Electricity Company (Nevlec) nine games to five.
Other activities, noted Mr Morton, would include two single tennis matches on Saturday February 7 between Curtis Morton and Andrew Merchant of TDC, and Vernel Powell versus Ernie France of TDC. On the same day, there would be a volleyball match between the St. Kitts office and the Nevis office, from where a combined Social Security team would be selected to face off with an Alex Claxton team. |
