Jenipha Freeman (right) listens to neighbour, Trudy Prentice, while Laston Nisbett looks on.

    Charlestown Nevis (October 25, 2004)
-- Mrs Jenipha Freeman, President of the Nevis Blind Light and Visually Impaired Society, had to remind persons who attended a Gospel Concert on Sunday afternoon at the Gingerland Wesleyan Holiness Church that she was indeed blind.

She was part of a trio that performed a skit that left the audience that included Nevis’ First Lady, Mrs Vernie Amory, in stitches.

She depicted an illiterate patient who misunderstood doctor’s instructions.

Where she was advised to take a tablet one day and skip the next, she took a rope and started skipping to the amazement of those present.

According to the society’s Programme Officer, Ms Trudy Prentice, the concert was held to raise fund to assist the society in hosting Caribbean Union of the Blind’s biennial conference next year, if Nevis’ bid to host it is given the nod by the regional body. They will know their fate next week.

In the skit, Mrs Freeman, who was a nurse before she lost her sight, played the illiterate patient, with Mr Laston Nisbett playing the doctor, and Ms Trudy Prentice playing the good neighbour who assisted the patient to interpret the doctor’s instructions.

Well-known groups and personalities made up the slate of entertainers, some of whom rendered solos, and others recited poems.

These included the Dore Brothers, the Adventist Minstrels, Jvani Liburd, Juliette Parris, Sheilla Dacosta, Samuel Powell, Norman Maynard, Nicoya Hanley, Vicky Lawrence, Vern and Venelle Powell, Mr and Mrs Winston Hanley, Sam Corbin, Elnora Sturge, Cavel Mills, and Rachel Williams.
