BVI to Expect More, Get More, with Digicel

    By Suelika N. Buchanan

~~Adz:Left~~ (Virgin Gorda; BVI): Digicel Wireless, a mobile operator company that has invested $1.9 billion in the region over the past seven years in building a network with operations in 23 markets was granted a 15 year license to operate in the British Virgin Islands (BVI).

Making the BVI their 24th market with plans to invest US 15 million as its initial investment which they feel can create a state-of the-art-network.

The license was granted in December 2007 and is said to have come after the liberalization of the telecommunications industry that was initiated by the government in early 2005, awarding licensing to two of the three applicants namely Cable & Wireless and CCT Global Communications.

However, Digicel resorted to legal action when its application was denied by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and won.

Now with the granting of the license Digicel becomes the third entrant into the BVI mobile market, and is expected to create good competition and move mobile telecommunications development further.

They are also expected to bring enormous benefits including competitive pricing, better choice and technology innovation to mobile customers in the British Virgin Islands.

Although it is unclear when the mobile company will begin operations in the BVI, the company is expected to employ 20 people while creating hundreds of indirect jobs in the BVI.

The company aims to be the number one operator in the BVI.
