St. Kitts to host 5th Petro Caribe Summit
~~Adz:Left~~ Basseterre, St. Kitts:- St. Kitts has accepted an invitation to host the 5th Petro Caribe Summit which will be held mid-year 2008.
The invitation was extended in December of last year during the 4th Petro Caribe Summit which was held in Cienfuegos, Cuba.
St. Kitts, having signed on to the Petro Caribe Agreement, received its first shipment of diesel from Venezuela on 3rd December, 2007 and according to Minister with responsibility for Public Works, Utilities, Transport and Posts, Asim Martin, to date, five shipments, totaling 20,000 barrels have been received.
The Venezuelan Government, according to the Minister, has agreed to assist with St. Kitts’ lack of storage facilities for 34,000 barrels of fuel. “…there is a delegation from Venezuela here in St. Kitts to finalize arrangements for the construction of a storage farm and the establishment of St. Kitts offices of the Petro Caribe.”
The Summit it to be held in June and according to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works, Utilities, Transport and Posts, Oaklyn Peets, a meeting is scheduled for next week where officials will discuss plans for hosting the Summit.
He said that somewhere in the region of 300 Presidents, Prime Ministers and other delegates from 14 countries from around the world including Latin America, South America and the Eastern Caribbean are scheduled to be in attendance at the Summit.
“This promises to be an extremely grand occasion for the Federation as it will be the first summit of its kind to be held in an English-speaking territory bringing so many presidents and other heads of state to St. Kitts.”
Plans for the hosting of the 6th Petro Caribe Summit seem to be in their early stages as it was also announced in the Declaration of the 4th Petro Caribe Summit that it will be held in Belize.
