    January 2008 Criminal Assizes begins tomorrow

    Basseterre, St. Kitts:
    Six murder cases, three cases of attempted murder and in excess of  12 cases of “wounding with intent” are listed for hearing during the January 2008 Criminal Assizes which is slated to begin tomorrow, Tuesday, at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex.

    The Director of Public Prosecution Pauline Hendrickson and her team have to task of disposing of 45 cases, 62.2 per cent or 28 of which were traversed from the last criminal assizes while the remaining 17 cases or 37.8 per cent are new. 

    Of the six murder cases, those of Vinrick John; Sheldon Isaac, Romeo Cannonier, Ruedeny Williams and Louis Gardner; Joshua Roach; Fitzroy Challenger, Jamal Bradshaw & Gregory Anthony Zakers as well as that of Lumumba Matthew and Justin Bass were traversed from the September 2007 Criminal Assizes.  The case of Che Gregory Spencer is the sole new murder case to be heard for this assizes.

    Maluska Williams & Wayne Matthew; Bernel Duncan as well as Lumumba Matthew & Justin Bass are expected to face a jury of their peers during this assizes as they have been charged with attempted murder.  These cases have been traversed.

    ~~Adz:Right~~ The individuals whose cases of “wounding with intent” were traversed from the last Criminal Assizes include: Clevorn Desouza; Shaweed Williams & Kenya Francis; Chevis Syder; Tijay Isaac & Jahmaire Rogers; Phillip Jones; Juan Fyfield and Darren Gibson.  New matters include those of Seymour James; Wendell Wilkinson; Jonelle Merritt; Vernon Richardson and Steve Francis.

    Cases of “causing grievous bodily harm”, “assault with intent to rob”, “rape”, “incest”, “indecent assault”, “causing death by dangerous driving”, “firearm to aid in the commission of a felony”, “having a firearm in possession with intent to endanger life”, “burglary”, “house breaking and larceny”, “building breaking and larceny”, “assault with intent to rob”, “robbery” and “unlawful carnal knowledge” are among the 45 scheduled for hearing.

    All accused will appear before resident judge His Lordship, Justice Francis Belle tomorrow where they will submit their pleas following which hearing dates will be set.
