    – The long-term development of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force was a main topic for the discussion at Monday’s routine meeting of the Cabinet.

The meeting, under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, reviewed the recent successes of the police in the fight against crime and government considered it urgent to endorse and give its firmest support to the present strategic plan of the Police.

Cabinet also discussed how other specific aspects of the plan may be expedited in their implementation.

Cabinet discussed the long-term vision for the top tier leadership of the Police Force and, among other things, agreed in principle to the creation of an additional post of Assistant Commissioner of Police to lend even stronger support to the Police Strategic Plan.

Prime Minister Douglas and the Minister of National Security, Hon. Dwyer Astaphan are scheduled to meet with the rank and file of the Police Force shortly to articulate their support for the strategic plan, to articulate the long-term vision of the government regarding the Police, and to signal their continuing strong support for the entire police body and the national security of the Federation. ~~Adz:Right~~

During Monday’s Cabinet meeting, the Minister Astaphan highlighted the need to continue to upgrade existing laws and enact new laws that strengthen the hand of the police and deter criminal activity at the same time.

Further discussion surrounded a variety of programmes to be implemented, the new police regulations that the police are presently discussing, and the assessment of the prison facility in Basseterre.
