BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – An event which will fuse Nigerian and other cultures, while commemorating in flamboyance and style, the 51st anniversary of the Independence of Nigeria will be taking place this weekend.

Firm Biz Ent in conjunction with the Nigerian Student Association (NSA) Windsor Chapter (St. Kitts) will be hosting its first ever Independence celebration which promises to highlight some of the intricacies and uniqueness of Nigerian culture while appreciating those of Kittitian/Nevisian and other cultures.

The event will be held at Sugars Club and the celebration commences at 11:00 p.m. on September 30 and will run into October 1, to coincide with the territory’s date of independence.

Afolabi Ajelabi, President of the Windsor’s NSA told SKNVibes that over the past three years, the Nigerians who reside in St. Kitts Nevis, have held intimate gatherings to commemorate their country’s independence. However, it was felt that the event should be expanded to give others an opportunity to experience Nigerians in a different atmosphere and for the Nigerians to celebrate their country’s liberation on a larger scale.

“The idea to bring a party like this was driven by the growing Nigerian community in St. Kitts, most of whom have not been home in years and also to show the nationals of St. Kitts and citizens of other countries how we party.”

He said the 200-plus Nigerian population on St. Kitts Nevis is aware of the pending celebration but took the opportunity to extend an invitation to persons of other nationalities to attend, have a blast and be a part of the fun.

“There have been celebrations over the past three years but it has been very low-keyed. It was more like a get-together but this year we are trying to have a big celebration. Our Nigerian friends of course they know about it already but also other nationalities that we met here, Kittitians, and other nationalities to celebrate with our Nigerian people.

It’s a party but a party with a mix of Nigerian culture, music and food. We are hoping to grow from this event and maybe from next year, we would be able to incorporate more aspects of our culture.”

A mere $10 is all that is needed to gain access to the independence fete and just in case you needed a bit more encouragement as to why you should attend this event, Ajelabi puts it best.

“If you like Nigerian people and you like the fact that you have Nigerians around you, come! If you like the fact that we are Africans and that we come from the same race, come! If you want to see Nigerians in a happier mode, come! It’s a celebration, so come!”

Don’t forget, a local deejay will be on hand, pumping the sweetest and hippiest tunes not only from Nigeria but from throughout the world!
