    Police Enjoys Continued Success

Public Relations Officer Inspector Cromwell Henry
Basseterre, St. Kitts (January 22, 2008):
The anticrime strategy of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force continues to yield results as there has been a major reduction in illegal activities over the past three months.

The Force’s Public Relations Officer Inspector Cromwell Henry told SKNIS that there has been significant achievements made by the security forces in curbing antisocial behaviour.

“We have seen a vast reduction in the number of break-ins, a reduction in the number of shootings and an increase in the number of firearms that have been recovered from the streets,” Henry stated. He attributed the success to increased foot and mobile patrols by uniformed and plain clothes police officers in hotspot areas as well as increased random searches.

The effective crime reduction strategy has also recorded successes in the trafficking of cannabis commonly referred to as marijuana. One recent incident to smuggle the illegal drug into the country was foiled by security agents. ~~Adz:Right~~

Inspector Henry revealed that last week more than 200 pounds of compressed marijuana was found on a yacht, docked in Nevis. The seizure was the result of a joint operation conducted by the Coast Guard, Customs and the Police. Two persons have been arrested and investigations are ongoing.”

“We recognize that we [the Police] cannot do it alone and a multi agency approach is the way to go and so we have been collaborating with the various law enforcement agencies and we have been working well together,” said the Police Inspector. “We share information and we take part in joint patrols (particularly with members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force) which have netted many successes.”

The Police High Command has told Cabinet that its future strategic crime fighting approach consists of tough enforcement strategies as well as softer strategies such as community outreach, in-service training, and utilization of modern technology.
