Three Farmers Benefit from Taiwanese Programme

~~Adz:Left~~ Basseterre, St. Kitts (January 22, 2008):  Minister responsible for Agriculture Honourable Cedric Liburd revealed that the government of Taiwan will provide assistance to enable three local farmers to upgrade their output.

Luther Clarke, Keithley Armstrong and Joseph Huggins who work in three main sectors of agriculture will each be aided to provide even more products, initially, to the Federation.

The agricultural assistance came about as a result of discussions that commenced in 2006 when Minister Liburd travelled to Taiwan.

Mr. Clarke of St. Peter’s will be able to upgrade his commercial vegetable farm and provide even more vegetables which will be sold first to the local market and eventually regionally.  Mr. Armstrong of Green Hill a fruit crop commercial farmer will be aided in increasing his harvest of fruit which include papaya, carambola, guava, sugar apple and pineapple.  The fruit will initially supply the local market and then feed into the department of agriculture’s fruit plate programme.

Minister Liburd also said that assistance will go to Mr. Huggins who works in the commercial livestock industry.  He said that part of the process includes relocating Mr. Huggins’ animals from the South East Peninsular.  The Minister of Agriculture explained that this is in order to facilitate the tourism-related developments taking place over on the South East Peninsula.  He said one of the conditions for the development to take place was the removal of the stray animals.  The task has commenced with the relocation of Mr. Huggins’ animals.
