BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, September 27th,  2011 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis has always been consistent like all of its Caribbean partners that the people of Palestine have a right to self determination.

“We believe in the self determination of the Palestinian People as we believe in the self determination and preservation of the People of Israel. We believe that there is the need for two separate States, in that area living and existing side by side with each other and the People living in peace with each other.

We believe in that very, very strongly,” said Prime Minister Douglas in response to a caller on his regular radio call in programme “Ask the Prime Minister” on Tuesday.

“I stress peace because the problem seems to be uncertainty as to whether or not Statehood, limited Statehood being achieved through the United Nations General Assembly can in fact bring the lasting peace, apart from the existence and the determination of a new State of Palestine,” said Dr. Douglas.

He said St. Kitts and Nevis continues to monitor the situation at the level of the United Nations, adding that the Security Council will be dealing with the request for Statehood by the President Abbas of the Palestinian Authority.

“When the Security would have dealt with that matter and we listen to the debates and the discussion as to what happens after, St. Kitts and Nevis being conscious and in monitoring the debate as it unfolds will obviously be taking a decision.

We continue to minitor like other Caribbean countries. Some have declared. We (St. Kitts and Nevis) has chosen not to. I am the Chairman of CARICOM and I believe that it is important for us to try as much as we can to have a single harmonized, common CARICOM position. Only when that fails, then St. Kitts and Nevis will do its own thing,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
