Tenth Independence Ball a Resounding Success

Press Release

BASSETERRE St.Kitts, September 27th, 2011 -- Under the fitting theme of “Love” the National Women’s Group again organized a spectacular extravaganza for the 10th anniversary of the People’s Action Movement annual Independence Ball.

Under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency the Governor General Sir Cuthbert Sebastian and hosted by Mr. And Mrs Lindsay Grant, several hundred guests gathered to enjoy a sumptuous dinner and exceptional entertainment to toast the nation’s 28th anniversary of political independence.

The festivities began at just about 8:00pm with the arrival of His Excellency and a splendid rendition on the steel pan of the National Anthem. The pan soloist was the exceptional and veteran Melvin Hewlette who created the perfect mood throughout the dinner with renditions of several jazz, reggae and rhythm and blues selections.

The always funny Mrs. Alicia Powell kept the program running smoothly as the mistress of ceremonies and had guests laughing as she conducted the trivia contests and distributed the lovely prizes donated by sponsors.

Among the entertainers were the Independence Calypso Monarch King Phonsie who serenaded the guests with two selections, his ever popular “You are the One” in a cappela and a new selection written just for independence as well as the former Culturama Calypso Monarch I – Soursop who also gave the crowd a taste of something new called “What you Crying For”.

A fixture of the Ball over the years has been Ms. Enid Lawrence who always manages to capture the current mood in her poetry and this year was no exception as she thrilled the crowd with her expressive verses praising the exceptional performance of sprint legend Kim Collins. Joining her with a rendition in prose about nurturing the roses in life despite their thorns was Ms. Cindy Demming.

After the dinner came the dancing with music provided by the band Lightsout. They kept the crowd moving with energetic selections of contemporary local hits. Then it was time to countdown to Independence Day which could not be denied although this year’s event could not be held on the usual 18th September.

Guests toasted to Her Majesty the Queen through her representative and to their proud nation before following Political Leader Lindsay Grant in the traditional conga line around the ballroom.
