    Inter-School Spelling Bee to Begin Next Week

    (Virgin Gorda; BVI): Primary and Secondary Schools from the British Virgin Islands are presently preparing for the annual Inter-School Spelling Bee Competition which begins Monday January 28.
     
    A total of 27 schools from Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada and Tortola are expected to compete.
     
    There will be preliminaries, semi-finals and finals that will begin on various dates starting at 7 p.m. at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall in Tortola.
     
    Coordinator of the Competition and Education Officer Susan Potter stated that the competition serves to promote the importance of spelling in all disciplines.
     
    “This competition will help students increase their vocabulary thereby enhancing their reading and communication skills,” she said.
     
    The first preliminaries will be held on Monday, Jan 28, while preliminaries for the secondary schools will be held on Wednesday, January 30.
     
    The semi-finals will take place on Feb. 11 and 13 for primary and secondary schools respectively.  ~~Adz:Right~~
     
    The finals will be held one month after the semis which will give the spellers a chance to regroup. The date set for the primary school finals is March 4 and the secondary school is scheduled for March 5.
     
     The competition is a prelude to Education Week which will be observed from March 9-15.
     
    The Inter-School Spelling Bee Champions for 2007 were St. George’s Primary School in the primary division and Whitney Allen and Donella Thomas of the Bregado Flax Secondary Division were named co-champions in the secondary division.
