Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 29th, 2011(SKNIS) -- The process of identifying the “25 Most Remarkable Teens in St. Kitts” continues as the Department of Youth Empowerment tries to uplift the activities of ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things.

Peace Corps Volunteer Connie Howard, who spearheads the initiative, told SKNIS that close to 100 nominations were received from parents, teachers, youth activists and other members of the general public who openly commended the youth for their positive impact in their respective communities.

“I was happily surprised,” Ms. Howard explained, in response to the number of nominations that were submitted for consideration. “What it showed me is that the programme couldn’t have come at a better time for the country and the kids.

Young people deserve recognition for their determination, courage, passion and hard work. It’s essential for healthy development to make children feel that what they do matters and this programme recognizes effort and commitment which in turn helps young people stay connected to their schools and their communities.”

Candidate interviews began in late June. All nominees were interviewed and evaluated on established criteria which took into account leadership, responsibility, character and accomplishment within and outside of the category in which they were nominated.

A select number of persons were then interviewed again in preparation for the inaugural presentation of awards for the 25 Most Remarkable Teens in St. Kitts. Director of Youth Empowerment Geoffrey Hanley indicated that the selected nominees will be honoured during this year’s National Youth Month celebrations scheduled in November.

The awards will be distributed at a ceremony specifically planned to recognize the outstanding young people. Members of Parliament are expected to have an active role in showing support and encouragement to the positive youths.
