    Mahalia Pencheon
    (St. Thomas, USVI):
Mahalia Pencheon is quite an ideal example of the success that hard work and perseverance brings at the university level.

The young woman from Christchurch, St. Kitts, is presently enrolled at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), St. Thomas Campus and pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in the field of Accounting.

What makes her stint even more noteworthy is the fact that she will be graduating in May, after two years in college! Yes, Mahalia managed to complete a four year programme in two years.

The Cayon High School graduate would be the first to tell you that she had to work extremely hard to be so close to finishing and she would also be the first to let you know that she needs to work even harder to cross the finish line.

“From ever since I made the decision to enroll at the University of the Virgin Islands, my intention was to come in and hurry up graduate,” she revealed.

She indicated that there are several challenges along the course of study but was quick to point out that you always appreciate your efforts more when you overcome the obstacles.

“I love the environment here,” Mahalia noted, during her interview.

“I would encourage any Kittitian or Nevisian to attend this University because it is affordable and the close proximity to home,” she added.

Her academic abilities have been widely recognized on campus and her advice is often sought by a number of her colleagues.

Additionally, Mahalia will be inducted into the Golden Key, an international system which recognizes students who have maintained a 3.2 grade point average and above.  ~~Adz:Right~~

She is also a member of the UVI Accounting Association, the Foreign Language Honour Society and the UVI St. Kitts and Nevis Association.

Interestingly, Mahalia is the President of the UVI St. Kitts-Nevis Association and she was quick to utilize the opportunity to give some insight into the body.

“Our objective is to maintain a Kittitian and Nevisian identity on campus while paving the way for other students to come,” she disclosed.

The body meets every Thursday. The membership is still being calculated because of the students who began this semester but estimates put it at 30.

Mahalia continues to be a source of inspiration among the other students and continues to campaign for greater privileges for St. Kitts and Nevis students at the University.
