50 Youth to Learn Entrepreneurial Skills
~~Adz:Left~~ Basseterre, St. Kitts (January 30, 2008): Recruitment is underway in St. Kitts and Nevis for 50 young persons who can benefit from a project geared to empower them through entrepreneurship training in the fields of Tourism and Heritage.
Secretary General of the National Commission for UNESCO Mr. Antonio Maynard has announced that plans are underway for the launch of Phase II of the UNESCO Youth Path Project which is geared to alleviate poverty through tourism and heritage training. He also revealed that Director of the UNESCO Caribbean Office Kwame Boafo will officiate at the launch scheduled for February 26th, 2008.
Mr. Maynard said project coordinators in St. Kitts and Nevis are in the process of recruiting employed and unemployed candidates between the ages of 15-25 who have an interest in the tourism industry and heritage preservation.
Phase II of the project will feature interactive sessions in the field of tourism, business management, heritage preservation, product development, accounting, finance, communication, language skills, tour guiding, team building, computer skills, hospitality, marketing and related fields. The Federation’s top presenters and facilitator’s in these areas will be contracted to carry out these entrepreneurial development sessions.
Mr. Maynard disclosed that this phase of the Youth Path project would include field trips to neighbouring territories where participants will observe sites of cultural and heritage preservation.
According to the Secretary General, news of the upcoming launch of phase II of the UNESCO Youth Path project has generated interest among youth who are steadily pouring in with applications. He said persons who qualify would be given priority based on a first come first served basis.
He also highlighted the fact that he would like to see more persons in the late teens to early twenties participate in the project as it was designed to put them on the leading edge of tourism development and give them an economic advantage through the implementation of information and skills they gain.
He referred to project participants who graduated from phase I and who are now either working in the tourism industry or geared to take leadership positions in the sector upon their departure from high school. He added that persons already out of school would have much to gain from this very targeted and specialized course.
