PRESS RELEASE

St. George's, Grenada, September 29th 2011 --  Former Prime Minister and Leader of Her Majesty's Opposition, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell is calling on the NDC Government to commence salary negotiations with Teachers, Pubic Workers, the Police, Nurses and all other Government Workers.

Commenting on the delay, the former Prime Minister says there is no reason why Government should not expedite the process that will facilitate increases to teachers or to any Government paid worker and should not use the current economic situation as an excuse.

In supporting this position Dr. Mitchell pointed to the fact that since the last general elections the Government has been steadily increasing its wage bill, which has risen from 17 million dollars to almost 27 million dollars.  He said additions to the payroll in many instances have not added to productivity or efficiency but were merely means to satisfy the needs and to repay some 'big boys' in the NDC hierarchy many of whom have other sources of income.

The second reason cited by the Leader is the fact that the Government's spending on overseas travel has been reckless and insensitive with close to two million dollars eaten up on overseas travel by Government Ministers and other officials last year.

The Opposition again calls on the Government to prioritize its spending in these tough economic times and to note that while Government spending increases, the last salary increase received by Government paid workers was under the New National Party Administration over three years ago
