    Kimbal Williams
    Basseterre, St. Kitts:
Head of the Police Force’s Press and Public Relations Office, Inspector Cromwell Henry is describing as “not unusual” a situation in which a man, who was convicted of firearm and ammunition possession, was sentenced to serve jail time and later granted bail.

Kimbal “Simbo” Williams was, on 22nd January 2008, convicted of the aforementioned offences and sentenced to serve five years imprisonment on each count which are to run concurrently.

Seven days after he began serving his sentence, however, he was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 with two sureties.

Henry, in an interview with SKNVibes, explained under what circumstances Williams was granted bail and he further explained that this is not an unusual occurrence.

“Usually when defendants appeal magisterial matters, sentence is stayed until the outcome of the appeal.  Having indicated his intention to appeal, he would have to enter into a recognizance to prosecute the appeal.  In this case the recognizance was $500,000 with two sureties.  If he does not prosecute the appeal, that amount will be levied against the defendant and the sureties and he will still be liable to serve the sentence which was imposed previously.”  ~~Adz:Right~~

According to a previous police press release, Williams was arrested after weapons and ammunition were found at his premises by the Federation’s security forces when they were executing a search warrant.

“On January 22nd 2008, the Security Forces executed a search warrant on premises at Canada Estate for firearms, drugs and ammunitions.  One .45mm pistol with 7 rounds of ammunitions, one bullet proof vest, one black mask, one camouflage uniform, one sniper scope, one tape recorder, and one rifle bipod were recovered from the premises. Kimbal Williams of Canada Estate was arrested for possession of the illegal items.  He will be charged for the offences and will be taken before the court shortly.”

The next St. Kitts-based sitting of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Court of Appeal is scheduled for April of this year which is when Williams is scheduled to appear before the said court where he is expected to appeal the sentence handed down by the magistrate court.
