Nevis wins !!

    Local leg Finals of the Courts/OECS Reading Competition

     

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RECARDOE RODRIQUES, who represented the Bellevue International Primary School in Nevis was yesterday (Oct. 3) announced the winner of the local leg of the Courts/OECS Reading Competition.

     

    The competition took place at the St. George Anglican Parish Hall with five students all competing for the chance to take part in the Regional Finals and winning very attractive prizes.

     

    Amassing a total of 261 points, Rodriques came out on top. Second place winner was Jackie Peets of the Tyrell Williams Primary School. She had a total of 237 points.

     

    Following just one point behind was the representative for the George Moody Stuart Primary School, Abion Stevens.

     

    With a total of 227 points, Tau Omowale, representing the Tucker Clarke Primary School was announced the fourth place winner, and fifth place winner was Juanee Pemberton of the Cayon Primary School.

     

    The competition was in the form of two rounds. In round one, each student had to read a story piece which was Anansi and Snake. The participants were given this piece a few days before the competition.

     

    For round two, the students had to read unseen pieces of news items. Each participant was given a different news piece which they had to sit at a table and read, depicting the image of a television news reporter.

     

    Judges for the competition were Hon. Curtis Martin, Terrance Crossman, and Mrs. Lornette Manners, and they assessed the reading fluency, accuracy, enunciation, smoothness, confidence and expression of the eight and nine year old participants.

     

    All participating students will receive prizes. For the Local Finals, the fourth and fifth placed students will each receive EC$300. The third placed student will be given EC$500.

     

    The second placed student will receive EC$750 while the first placed winner wins EC$2 000. The schools will also benefit likewise.

     

    For the Regional Finals, along with a financial gift, each student will also be given a laptop. The sixth, fifth and fourth placed winners will each receive $1 000. The third placed winner will receive $2 000.

     

    The second placed winner will receive $3 000, and the first placed winner will be given $5 000. The winning school will also be given $5 000.

     

    The Regional Finals will be taking place at the Sir Cecil E. Jacobs Auditorium of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) on October 20.
