CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - MAGISTRATE Yasmine Clarke yesterday sentenced a male Cotton Ground resident to three years jail for stealing from a learning institution and a private residence.

    Leo Herbert of Cotton Ground

Leo Herbert of Cotton Ground was accused of stealing an IBM computer CPU, a Cable and Wireless CPU, two surge protectors and other accessories from St. Thomas’ Primary School. He also stole a pen drive and PSP Sony player from Shirlene Parry of Colquhnouns Estate, Nevis. These offences were committed last month.

Acting Prosecutor Sergeant Simeon Prentice told the court that on January 11, 2008 an Information Technology at St. Thomas’ Primary School discovered the computer equipment and accessories missing.

The school’s Principal, Erlene Maynard, reported the matter to the police, who, during their investigations, searched Herbert’s residence and found some of the stolen items. He was subsequently arrested and charged.

It was revealed that on the day Herbert stole the items from Parry’s residence, her daughter had returned from school and noticed the ‘sliding’ door to her home opened. Parry informed the police, and during their investigations found a pen drive and a PSP player in Herbert’s residence.~~Adz:Right~~

After the prosecution rested its case Herbert pleaded with the Magistrate to be lenient on him. He told the Magistrate that the inculcation of his criminal activities was due to not having a mentor to correct him during his formative years.

“Are you saying you did not know stealing was wrong?” the Magistrate asked Herbert. She then enforced a restitution order and sentenced him to three years imprisonment.

In the same court, Akeon Claxton of Bath Village was charged with possession of cannabis and was fined EC$ 800.00 The offence was committed last week.

And in an unrelated case, Nathan Shipley of Camps Village, New Castle was fined EC$ 500.00 for driving an uninsured vehicle on January 23, 2008. He will also have to pay an additional fine of EC$ 500.00 for driving without a valid license.
