BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man from Sandy Point has been found guilty of robbery, today, Oct. 4 at the Basseterre High Court, unanimously by a 12-member jury.

The prosecution team which was led by Crown Counsel O’Neal St. A. Simpson, proved that Chaddin Buchanan, armed with a firearm did rob Alexander Warner on November 27, 2010.

The incident was said to have occurred around 10:00 p.m. at a shop belonging to Warner on Station Street, Sandy Point, where Buchanan robbed Warner of EC$200.

The prosecution called a total of four witnesses and after the prosecution rested its case, the accused (unrepresented) chose to give evidence under oath and called two witnesses.

In his testimony, Warner told the court that he knew the accused since he opened his shop four years ago and said that he also knew him very well.

He said the accused would always be in his shop buying “chicken and chips”.

On the night of the incident, he said he was cleaning up when he heard a noise and someone say “everyone get down”.

Warner said there were two persons a tall guy with a gun on the outside and the other who was shorter on the inside.

He said they were wearing dark clothing and masks.

There were also about 8-10 persons in the shop at the time playing dominoes.

Warner said that he recognized Buchanan’s voice and said the accused kicked down a table in the shop and that he has seen Buchanan behave in that way before.

However, Buchanan, during his testimony told the court that at the time of the incident he was at home and then later went to a nightclub.

But Warner told the court that he heard one of the mask men refer to the other as “Tookie” and that is when he suspected it was the accused because he knows the accused goes by that name.

He said the other mask man did not respond.

Buchanan also in his testimony said that he is only known as “Chaddin”, his brother who was one of his witnesses also said the same thing.

However, the other witness who testified in court on behalf of Buchanan, a female, said that she also knows the accused by the name, “Tookie”.

Buchanan is expected to be sentenced on Thursday, October 20 after social inquiry reports have been conducted.
