    CHARLESTOWN, Nevis
    - Qualified  ‘A’ level students interested in pursuing graduate studies at US-based Mid Western University and Stephen F. Austin State University are not required to sit for SATs.

Dr. Randy Glean, Director International Services, Mid Western University and Daniel Newton Director, Office of International Program Stephen F. Austin State University told Nevis ‘A’ level students at the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS) ‘A’ level College they must take their studies seriously as this would open educational opportunities for them.

Norton told the students that they should aspire to pursue a Bachelor’s degree as it would enable them to access opportunities all over the world.  He said Caribbean students had a sound education, “Most of you have a good education. You know what hard work is.”

Dr. Randy, who is on his eighth students’ recruitment drive, told students they

could not go wrong in their life goals if they chose to further their studies. He said the ambition to go on with education was best served by going to university.

“Consider USA…if you are there, you have unlimited opportunities. The first degree helps you to get other degrees,” he told attentive students and added that in most cases, students who wished to pursue their Master degrees easily accessed scholarships.

The university is seeking to recruit 25 students from the Federation for August. All will receive a tuition scholarship and competitive waiver.  It entitles them to pay less than in-state tuition or approximately $3 000 per semester.

Head of Counselling Unit CSS Lornette Swanson, who returned to Nevis, recently undertook her graduate and masters studies at Mid Western University. She encouraged the students to choose Mid Western due to its Caribbean-friendly atmosphere and its impressive academic record.

Swanson said if she were to repeat her education pursuit, she would choose Mid Western.
The Caribbean Recruitment Program began in St. Kitts with the first group of students arriving in January 1998.  Since then, almost 100 Kittitians have enrolled at MSU with over 50 graduates to date. About 45 students of the Federation students are currently at the college.

“We have had some outstanding achievements…three Kittitians currently have or are close to having PhDs having graduated from the program…one other MD… over 30 master’s degrees,” Randy said in an email interview.

Dr. Randy Glean officially launched the Caribbean Recruitment Programme in the spring of 1993.

This was accomplished by the provision of competitive waivers and partial tuition scholarships by the university. In addition, the core students agreed to provide basic adjustment services and assistance to students who arrived in the later semesters.

With the combination of these factors, the stage was set for the growth of the programme. In the late spring of 1995, a change in state law threatened to derail the entire competitive waiver option and almost put an end to the programme.

Dr. Randy further said that most students from the Federation opt for business related programmes. Special tuition is offered for the Caribbean students. Caribbean Students Organisation handles all the settlement issues…and the organisation has over 250 current Caribbean students.  Over 500 students have graduated from the program to date from the region and over 800 have been recruited.
