    Writing skills pay off for primary school kids

     (Basseterre, St. Kitts): WINNFM held a short prize giving ceremony yesterday February 7th for the three winners of the fifth annual ‘WINNFM’S Christmas Short Story Competition 2007/2008.
     
    The first place winner was 12-year-old Acaidieon Tyson of Gingerland Primary school, second place was 12-year-old K’resha Browne of Tyrell Williams Primary and in third place was 9-year-old Shenisia Puran of the Seventh Day Adventist Primary school.
     
    The participants had to write short stories that had a distinct holiday theme and were heart-warming, creative and grammatically correct.
    One of the judges commented that it was a pleasure reading all of the entries and commended all the children from the 14 primary schools who entered for their participation.
     
    Each winner received a plaque for their school and a participation trophy along with cash prizes compliments of the sponsors Scenic Railway, S. L. Horsfords, O D Brisbane and Cable and Wireless. The first place winner also received Game Cube video game compliments of the gold sponsor, TDC.

    Competition Committee Chairperson, the competition was started in 2003 to boost the Christmas Spirit and engage the youth in creative writing and encourage them to take pleasure in reading, writing and using their imagination. 
     
    She further went on to say that WINNFM takes great pride in community-oriented endeavors because they feel that the social and educational development of our people is not only enhanced by news and music, talk and sports, but by all those other things that enrich and stimulate the mind and spirit.
