Basseterre, St. Kitts (November 10, 2004): Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas emphasised the importance of telecommunications at the United Telecommunications Service (UTS) - CariGlobe groundbreaking ceremony, yesterday.
Prime Minister Douglas, delivered the feature address in Belle Vue at the construction site of the first telecommunications transmit-receive site or cell site. He said the construction of the cell site demonstrated the official start of the infra structural development of UTS-CariGlobe St. Kitts and Nevis. He emphasised that upon completion of the project residents of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Caribbean region and the world would be able to benefit from increased cellular coverage.
The Prime Minister further said that the telecommunications industry and worldwide progress - mainly technological advances and evolving business needs - have led to an increasing desire for people to be interconnected.

The advantages of telecommunication advancement were also outlined. Prime Minister Douglas it would form the basis for the generation of more business services, provide the basis for employment and attract additional investment capital. He added that a competitive environment is expected to bring increased services, better telecommunication products and increase the customer base in an environment of affordability.
The first phase of the UTS-CariGlobe infra structural development involves the construction of nine cell sites and the second phase an additional seven. According to Chief Executive Officer of CariGlobe Mr. Clecton Phillip, the project will have a duration of three to five years at a cost of EC$20 million.
