Activities on the way as territory observe world food day in OCT

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 6th, 2011  – The Territory will join the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO of the UN) in observance of World Food Day 2011, with a number of activities during this month.

    World Food Day will be observed worldwide on October 16; however the Department of Agriculture will observe this event with various activities planned under the theme, “Food Prices – From Crisis to Stability”.Chief Agricultural Officer Mr. Bevin Braithwaite told the Department of Information and Public Relations that, “The theme is aimed to bring awareness to the factors affecting food prices and what we as a territory can do to continue working towards ensuring our food security”.

     

    “The observance of World Food Day in the BVI is to bring attention to the recent developments in agriculture, pay homage to the hardworking farmers and to showcase local produce in new and innovative dishes,” Mr. Braithwaite shared.

     

    Activities planned for World Food Day include the sponsoring of a Morning Quiz and the airing of the “Word of the Day” on ZBVI 780 AM, appearances on the GIS Radio Report and Marlene’s Kitchen radio programme. In addition the public is invited to the World Food Day ceremony and presentation at the Breezeway of the Central Administration Complex on Monday, October 17.

     

    The Ceremony will be held from 10:00 am – 11:00 am and will include remarks from the Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Honourable Omar W. Hodge, and the Chief Agricultural Officer, a sermonette by Pastor Howard Simon and participation by schools and other government departments.

     

    The presentation will begin promptly after the ceremony featuring displays, informational packages, and tastings of rabbit, local chicken and other produce until 3pm.

     

    The Territory’s first observance of World Food Day was in 2009. World Food Day was established in 1979 by the FAO of the UN. FAO of the UN leads international efforts to defeat hunger, serving both developed and developing countries.
