Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 5th, 2011 -- I greet everyone in the name of the Great God of the Universe, Creator of the Universe through His son Jesus Christ. Today is World Teacher’s Day and I could not let this moment pass by without publicly saluting our Territory’s finest - our teachers.

The success our children are experiencing today is largely due to our teacher’s relentless efforts to ensure that each student in our public education system is given a fair and equal opportunity to excel. Without our teachers we would have no doctors, lawyers, dentist, carpenters, mechanics, pilots, chefs, and the list goes on.

Despite the challenges, despite the naysayers, our teachers in our education system, both public and private, are some of the best teachers in the world. Through the efforts of our teachers here in the Virgin Islands, student performance has improved significantly over the last few years.

This is moving from good to great! Through the efforts of our teachers more of our students are aspiring to excel overall and working towards getting into the top 3 in their respective classes in the primary division. This is moving from good to great! Through the efforts of our teachers students are now taking more pride in their work than they did in the past years.

This is moving from good to great! We might not be where we need to be in education as yet but because of the efforts of our dedicated teachers, among other stakeholders, thank God we are not where we were a few years ago. Teachers, today I salute you and I ask everyone to do the same.

Our teachers are the engine of our education system and I would like to thank our teachers from the bottom of my heart for the work they do in preparing the future of this Territory for the future. Through the ongoing efforts of our dedicated and hardworking teachers, together, in the school year 2010-2011, we have raised the pass mark for the primary five assessments by just under 3% from the previous school year. This is moving from good to great!

Through the ongoing efforts of our dedicated and hardworking teachers, together, we have ensured through the grade level initiative that all primary schools in each grade level from Anegada to Jost Van Dyke are now on the same level in every respect.

This is moving from good to great! Through the ongoing efforts of our dedicated and hardworking teachers, together, we have introduced the PowerSchool technology so that we can monitor our children’s academic performance, among other school related performances, through the internet on the computer in real time. This is moving from good to great!

Through the ongoing efforts of our dedicated and hardworking teachers, together, we have ensured that each of our primary school teachers will be fully trained and qualified by the year 2020 in our vision 2020 Bachelor’s Programme at the University of the West Indies via H.L. Stoutt Community College. This is moving from good to great!

Daily our teachers come to school prepared. Prepared to meet our future; Prepared to teach our future; Prepared to reach our future. Teachers you understand better than anyone else that if we can’t reach our children then we can’t teach them. Through your consistency of being prepared, this has allowed us all to realize that the future belongs to the prepared!

Teachers, today is your day and you deserve it! Keep moving from Good to Great and with God’s help you will continue to do great things in the classrooms, but more-so, in the lives of our children. We thank each family of each teacher for sharing them with us. Thank God for our teachers.

On this World Teacher’s Day, I once again express my love and appreciation for all our teachers. May God continue to richly bless our teachers as they continue to touch the lives of others.
