BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DEVON WILLIAMS of Sandy Point has been found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving, after the jury returned the unanimous verdict today, Oct. 6, at the Basseterre High Court.
Williams was then taken into custody where he will await his sentencing before His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas, which is scheduled for October 27, 2011.
After the verdict was rendered His Lordship told the jury that it was an interesting case and hope they learnt from it.
The trial began on Tuesday, Oct. 4 and Crown Counsel Garth Wilkin who is the prosecutor in the matter called a total of 13 witnesses to give evidence, while Williams was unrepresented by counsel.
The prosecution proved that Williams did hit Brombill on Aug. 11, 2009 in Sandy Point, while driving on the Island’s Main Road. The car that struck Brombill then fled the scene.
Brombill was struck by a motorcar bearing registration number R173 which was first reported to be driven by Jevon Allen of Old Road. Brombill was pronounced dead on the scene.
The prosecution rested its case yesterday, Oct. 5, and today Oct. 6, Williams decided to take the witness dock and give sworn testimony.
He told the court that it was Mikhale Kelly, another occupant of the car, who was driving and that he had told the police a lie when he said he (Williams) was driving.
After the accident he was arrested on Oct. 9, 2011, and told the court that he lied to and evaded the police for two months after the accident because he was being threatened and harassed by Kelly.
This is the second time the case has been tried as it ended in a hung jury at the May 2011 Criminal Assizes.
After the verdict was rendered, Williams who had no expression on his face was taken to Her Majesty’s Prison to await sentencing.
