BASSETERRE St.Kitts, October 7th, 2011 -- The members of the legal profession (now referred to as attorneys-at-law) have performed their first duty under the Legal Profession Act in the election of a Council of the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association which was established by the Act as a statutory body and replaces the informal Association by the same name. The Council elected comprises Officers and Members as follows:

Patricia Dublin-Lewis - Vice President
MacClure Taylor - Treasurer
Tapley Seaton Q.C. - Member
Theodore Hobson - Member
Arudranauth Gossai - Member
Dahlia Joseph - Member
Adrian Scantlebury - Member
Miselle O’Brien-Norton - Member
Shawna Lake - Member
The Council has appointed Ms. Dahlia Joseph as the Secretary of the Association.
The Legal Profession Act contains a comprehensive code of conduct for attorneys-at-law and processes to enforce compliance by attorneys at law with the provisions of the code. A Disciplinary Committee of The Bar Association is given disciplinary powers over attorneys-at-law. The Act requires that the Disciplinary Committee be appointed by the Chief Justice after consultation with the Bar Council. The public will be notified when the appointment has been made.
The Bar Association is also given power to regulate the handling of clients’ monies entrusted to attorneys-at-law. These powers are additional to the powers of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court to hear and determine complaints against attorneys-at-law.
