    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,  October 6th, 2011   – Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Andrew A. Fahie praised the work of local teachers and called them the ‘engine of our education system’ in a message delivered for World Teachers’ Day.

    The minister said, “The success our children are experiencing today is largely due to our teacher’s relentless efforts to ensure that each student in our education system is given a fair and equal opportunity to excel. Without our teachers we would have no doctors, lawyers, dentists, carpenters, mechanics, pilots, chefs, and the list goes on”The Minister called the teachers some of the best in the world. He said, “Despite the challenges, despite the naysayers, our teachers in our education system, both public and private, are some of the best teachers in the world.

     

    Through the efforts of our teachers here in the Virgin Islands, student performance has improved significantly over the last few years. This is moving from good to great!”

     

    The Education Minister continued, “We might not be where we need to be in education as yet but because of the efforts of our dedicated teachers, among other stakeholders, thank God we are not where we were a few years ago. Teachers, today I salute you and I ask everyone to do the same.”

     

    The Education Minister credited the teachers for the grade level initiative which ensures that all primary schools in each grade level from Anegada to Jost Van Dyke are at the same level.

     

    The Minister also credited the teachers for their role in introducing the ‘PowerSchool’ technology which allows for the monitoring of students academic and other school related performances, through the internet via the computer, in real time.

     

    Additionally, Hon. Fahie stated that through teachers’ efforts, “primary school teachers will be fully trained and qualified by the year 2020 in our vision 2020 Bachelor’s Programme at the University of the West Indies via H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.”

     

    As part of World Teachers’ Day, the Education Minister volunteered and taught Mathematics to the class two students at the Isabella Morris Primary School. The Minister was one of several parents who volunteered as the teachers held a breakfast and shared gifts for World Teachers Day.

     

    The Ministry of Education and Culture supports World Teachers’ Day, observed on October 5th which celebrates the role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels.
