BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - NEWS of an orange juice recall in Barbados was of great concern to some residents over the past weekend, but on investigation SKNVibes learned from local Fruta agents, OD Brisbane & Sons Ltd., that that particular product was not imported into the Federation.

It was reported that recent investigations by the Barbados Ministry of Health revealed that a quantity of 250ml size Fruta orange juice drink with real fruit juice, packaged in plastic bottles and bearing an expiry date of May 2, 2008, was contaminated.

Reports further stated that the orange juice drink was contaminated with Candida or Klebsiella organisms and were therefore considered unwholesome. ~~Adz:Right~~

A representative of OD Brisbane & Sons Limited had contacted their main supplier of Fruta products and was provided a list of serial numbers of the affected batches of which none had legally arrived in the Federation.

Further investigations by SKNVibes revealed that the Fruta products were delivered to Barbados from Trinidad in a chilled container but were not kept chilled, and after returning to room temperature a fungus grew on the outside of the bottles.

Apart from OD Brisbane, individuals may have other ways of obtaining Fruta products. However, the  public is asked to abstain from buying the ‘Orange’ Fruta in the 250ml plastic bottles, unless confirmation can be had that it’s not from the contaminated batch.
