Hon. Cedric Liburd,Minister of Agriculture, Housing and Fisheries
BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS- AT a press conference yesterday Feb 12, Minister of Agriculture, Housing and Fisheries Hon. Cedric Liburd stated that the Ross University of Veterinary Medicine had discovered a tentative cause of death for the fish found deceased on earlier this month.

The Minister said that samples were being sent to a laboratory in Canada for further independent testing before any official statement on the cause of death could be released.

Various species of fish have been floating dead in the waters around St. Kitts and Nevis since the beginning of the month and previous warnings about the dead fish were reiterated by the Minister at the press conference.

“Please note who you [the public] are buying the fish from and at the same time make sure that when you purchase fish, you are sure to some extent what kind of fish you are buying and…that the fish is of good quality,” Liburd said.

As of yet, there have been no reported cases of illness due to the contaminated fish being consumed. ~~Adz:Right~~

Liburd also spoke to the issue of monkeys adversely affecting the farms of St. Kitts. He said that during a meeting last Wednesday, it was brought to the attention of the ministry that large packs of monkeys have been consuming fruit crops all over the island.

“I have been asking regionally and also internationally to find some solutions as to how we can curtail and control the monkeys,” Liburd said.

Minister Liburd said that the farmers were also upset over packs of stray dogs harming and killing some of their smaller goats and sheep, with some claiming to have lost as many as fifty animals.

“In 2007 we were able to go to Parliament to enact legislation to assist in controlling stray dogs across the island,” Liburd said. In addition to this, the Minister said that a local veterinarian had been contacted to help enact a plan to control these animals.
