BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS- THE Social Security Board hosted a Health Fair on Friday at Independence Square. According to Kamilah Lawrence, Public Relations Officer for the Social Security Board, the main goal of the event was to “sensitize the public about healthy lifestyles and to further the public awareness of Social Security in St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The fair was one in a long series of activities, operating under the banner ‘Building on Yesterday’s Foundation, Consolidating Today’s Success, Fashioning Tomorrow’s Vision,’ designed to celebrate the thirty years of the Social Security Fund in the Federation.

With almost $890 million in investments as of October 2007, Lawrence said

that Social Security could support the people of St. Kitts and Nevis until 2062, but that it was also important for the program to maintain the evolution and reform it has seen over the years to ensure its sustainability.

“Social Security is a household name, but we must continue to educate the people even though we think they are informed,” she said. “We even talk to students at the primary school level. ‘Social Security from the cradle to the grave’ is what we like to say around the office.”

Promotional booths, such as those hosted by the Community Based Nurses and the National AIDS Secretariat, drew in many spectators with free items and services.

Diabetes and hypertension screenings, detoxification services, and demonstrations of various safe sex devices were popular with patrons of the fair.

The Department of Agriculture sold a ‘Kittitian Food Plate’ comprised completely of locally grown fruits such as watermelon, guava, pineapple, and carambola.

Dried and packaged fruits were also sold to demonstrate the kind of agro-processing work that has been happening between the Federation and the Republic of China in Taiwan. ~~Adz:Right~~
