BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The loud explosion that alarmed the residents of Bird Rock and beyond turned out to be coming from the Bird Rock Electricity substation. This led to yet another power outage between seven and eight on Monday morning (Oct.10).
Prior to this explosion, householders were already rushing to turn their appliances off due to noticeable fluctuations in current as lights dimmed and fans slowed down their rotations.
The explosion at the Bird Rock substation resulted in a fire, but luckily firemen quickly arrived on the scene bringing the blaze under control and finally putting it out.
SKNVibes is still making enquiries to ascertain what could have caused the explosion but we have not yet been able to get answers. Our investigations are ongoing.
Just when we thought things could not get worse, it seems they have with this substation being put out of commission.
At the time of writing, some areas of Basseterre have had a return of electricity service, but some areas are still without current.
We hope that the authorities will communicate to consumers who are still alarmed and wondering what this means for them in the short and medium term.
