ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 7th, 2011  – A major road widening project will commence tomorrow, October 8 in the vicinity of the Methodist Manse road and Russell Hill as the Ministry of Communications and Works ensures the continuous development and maintenance of the Territory’s road network.

“The project is very important as it will significantly reduce the current traffic congestion that has plagued the area for many years,” Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works Mrs. Arlene Smith-Thompson told the Department of Information and Public Relations

The road widening project which includes excavation of the hillside, blasting and hammering of rocks, the relocation of power lines, trucking of material, dust control and the diversion of traffic is expected to end within eight weeks of the start date. Measures have been put in place to minimise traffic operation impacts such as access and safety.

The road known as the Paul Wattley By-pass road will be closed to traffic travelling east from Russell Hill at the junction to the St. Georges School and access from Joe’s Hill road will be restricted to residents only. Persons dropping off or picking up children at St. Georges School are asked to use the Main Street access for the duration of the project.

“We know that the road is heavily used and therefore we are asking for the cooperation of motorists so that the works could be executed in a timely manner,” Mrs. Smith Thompson said.

Traffic signs and cones will be used to dictate traffic flow for the duration of the project and the public is asked to adhere to all traffic signs and to use caution while driving in the work zone.

The Ministry of Communications and Works is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the continued development and maintenance of the Territory’s public infrastructure.
