Latinos and locals – great fusion at 2nd Annual Latin Fiesta!

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A huge crowd gathered on the sandy beach of the Spice Mill venue at the South East Peninsular yesterday (Oct. 9) for the second Annual Latin Fiesta. The exciting event saw many locals as well as people from the Latin community from at home and abroad.

After being thrilled with the opening of a Bomba dance by members of the Puerto Rican national folkloric ballet- Areyto, the Fusion Latina Band entertained the crowd with some pulsating Latin music that made just about everyone shake a body part.

A large number of locals were in attendance and although they may not have understood the lyrics of the songs, the sweet rhythm sure made them join in the crowd dancing in sequence and pulling friends as well as strangers into the conga lines.

The entire event had a friendly and family atmosphere, as many of the Latinos held the hands of locals teaching them to salsa and do other Spanish moves.

Bars were set up around the venue to avoid congestion and a variety of dishes with the Latin cuisine flavour were sampled by locals.

Spice Mills’ usually delectable meals went Latin and spanish menus were the order of the day – all in keeping with the Latin theme.  Latinos were clearly in their comfort zone and locals had something new to experience.

After the band had climaxed sometime around 6:00 p.m., DJ Fish took over for the after party creating a fusion between locals and Latinos who danced for hours to a blend of Spanish music.

Speaking with one of the organisers at the event, Michelle Demming told SKNVibes that she was really happy and overwhelmed with the outcome.

“From the beginning I knew this event would be very successful” she added.

Demming gave special thanks to the sponsors which included: Fritolay, Formosa Garden Restaurant, Heineken, Carambola Beach Club, St. Kitts Tourism Authority, ZIZ, Avalon, Hopson Enterprises, Sol E’ Mar, UPS, Shiggidy Shack, St. Kitts Marriott Resort and the Conquering Storm Shutters.

She said without them the event would not have been possible. Demming also added that the feedback was excellent and the people were extremely happy.

She said she is positive that the crowd of the Third Annual Latin Fiesta would be triple the crowd that attended last night.

The event was organized by Kajola Kristada in collaboration with Spice Mill.
