BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CLIVE GRANT of La Guerite is awaiting his fate in a burglary case where prosecution alleges that on January 21, 2011, he broke into the home of Trevor ‘Jamsta’ Woodley and stole a Sony Ericsson cellular phone.

The trial began on Friday, Oct. 7, and according to the prosecution team which was led by Rhonda Nisbett-Browne, Grant broke into Woodley’s home and stole a Sony Ericsson cellular phone that was valued at EC$700.

Woodley testified in court and said that he heard a sound and went to investigate and saw a man crouched over.
He said that the burglar grabbed his wife bag but dropped it as he fled the scene.

Woodley said that he observed the cellular phone which was charging at the time, missing.
    He immediately made a report.

Grant was later spotted by police in the Greenlands area. When they called out to him, Grant began running and hid from the police.

He was shot in the leg and hospitalized during his apprehension.
A total of five witnesses testified on behalf of the prosecution and after they rested their case against him, he decided to take the witness stand and give evidence under oath.

He told the court that when he was walking in the Greenlands area, he was not sure who was calling him and said he saw people coming and got scared and started running.

He said that he also had some marijuana on him and wanted to get rid of it.
He also said that the persons did not state they were police and said it could have been anyone.

The cellular phone which belonged to Woodley was allegedly found in Grant’s possession along with a screwdriver, crowbar and knife in a backpack.

Grant told the court that he did not have any cellular phone in his possession and that he would not say the backpack was his if he knew it had a stolen item in it.

However, the prosecution said that according to the police investigation, Woodley’s cellular phone was found in Grant’s possession.

The clothing which was described by Woodley that the burglar wore was also different from those in which  Grant was found.

Grant was wearing a white shirt when police apprehended him and he also had a brown shirt in his bag while Woodley said he wore a gray shirt.

In his closing remarks to the jury, Grant said that it was a very serious case and pointed out the discrepancy in the dress code of the burglar and himself.

He said he knows for a fact he did not go to the home of Woodley and said that if he knew he had the phone in his possession that he would have gotten the rid of it as he claims to have done with the marijuana.

Grant also has to answer the charge of being in possession of housebreaking implements - during the 2011 Criminal Assizes.

Meanwhile, in other court related matters, a man whose rape case at the last criminal assizes was deemed a mistrial is also expected to be heard today.

The man is charged with having sexual intercourse with a certain female without her consent on June 19, 2010 at Camps.
