BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, October 10th, 2011 (CUOPM) – The Republic of China (Taiwan) has pledged its unshakable commitment to all of cooperation projects and programmes with the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
“I will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that Taiwan continues to pledge its unshakable commitment to all of our cooperation projects and programmes with the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
We are proud of what we have achieved, and humbled by the enormity of the task ahead, but with your assistance, we will keep moving forward and going strong,” said Resident of the Republic of China (Taiwan) His Excellency Ambassador Miguel Tsao when he hosted a Dinner at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort in celebration of the 100th National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the 28th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan).
Ambassador Tsao said Taiwan has developed into the freest, most democratic and most prosperous of Chinese societies in the past 100 years, since it became the first Republic in Asia in 1911.
“Since my President Ma Ying-jeou took office in 2008, my country has adopted a pragmatic and forward-looking approach in its dealings in the international arena. The results are more than tangible. The tense relationship between Taiwan and Mainland China has eased greatly.
Consequently, six (6) high-level cross-strait negotiations have been conducted; and fifteen (15) agreements, including direct air and sea traffic links, as well as the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) have been hammered out,” said Ambassador Tsao, who boasted that 117 countries, including St. Kitts and Nevis, have granted visa-waiver or landing visa treatment to Taiwanese citizens.
“And our country has made significant strides on the world stage, leaving indelible footprints in the sands of technology, agriculture, manufacturing, commerce, education, and culture. At the same time, we have been more active in visibly participating in international exercises. For instance, Taiwan has extended its hands and shown love to those countries in need of rescue teams and donations in the wake of natural disasters such as the earthquakes in Haiti, Japan and New Zealand,” said the Taiwan diplomat.
He disclosed that with the threshold of the next 100 years, His Excellency President Ma Ying-jeou has envisioned the future role of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in keeping with its history, traditions and potential.
“Thus, the people and government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) will continue to be peacemakers, providers of international humanitarian aid, promoters of creative culture, creators of new technologies and business opportunities, and the standard bearers of Chinese culture,” he told the invited guests including by Governor General His Excellency Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian; Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas; Deputy Governor General of Nevis, His Honour Mr. Eustace John and Mrs. John; Sir Edmund and Lady Lawrence; His Lordship the Resident Judge, the Hon. Mr. Justice Errol Thomas; Cabinet Ministers; the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Hon. Curtis Martin; Deputy Premier of Nevis, Hon. Hensley Daniel and Mrs. Daniel; St. Kitts and Nevis’ First Non-Resident Ambassador to Taiwan, His Excellency Mr. Terrance Byron and Mrs. Byron, senior government officials and representatives of the local business sector.
Acknowledge the helping hands that assisted Taiwan to stand on its feet in the past, and will be forever grateful, Ambassador Tsao said the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis for their strong support.
“We have worked together, hand in hand, arm in arm, and our two countries have accomplished a great deal,” said Ambassador Tsao.
Pointing to the milestone marking the 28th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis, the Taiwan diplomat noted the Republic of China was the first country to establish such ties with St. Kitts and Nevis.
“I wish to thank the government and people of this country for standing solidly with my country for 28 of the 100 years of our history. We look forward to hundreds of years more of our sound, and mutually-beneficial relationship,” said Ambassador Tsao.
He used the opportunity to underscore the staunch support demonstrated last September at the UN Radio interview, and the “General debate of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly” by the Honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil Douglas and the Honorable Deputy Prime Minister, Sam Condor.
“Their kind and strong words at the UN - so encouraging and touching—helped to further expand Taiwan’s international participation. In this regard, I do believe our two countries can work together and grow together in the global arena,” said the Taiwan diplomat.
