Students Get Literacy Boost from Chevron

~~Adz:Left~~ Basseterre, St. Kitts (February 18, 2008): The students of the Deane-Glasford Primary School have added incentive to read with the donation of brand new books to the school library
    .

The books along with a photocopier were donated by Chevron West Indies Ltd., formerly Texaco.  Avonelle Martin, a Deane Glasford teacher noted that the relationship between Texaco, which is now Chevron, has lasted over ten years. She informed that the company had given generously to the school’s sporting activities and had already contributed to the library when it was outfitted in 1995-1996.  She said that when the local representative visited last year he observed that the school needed books and a photocopier.

During the brief opening ceremony, local Chevron Business Consultant Mr. Granville Jacobs and Operations Coordinator Ms. Esmeralda Richardson accompanied District Manager Mr. Hiram Acevedo who said that his company was pleased with the long association with Deane-Glasford.  He said the relationship has lasted for some 15 years since his company adopted the school.  He encouraged the students to take care of the books so that students who come after, would be able to use them as well.

Parliamentary Representative of Constituency #8 Honourable Cedric Liburd explained the emphasis that he placed on literacy.  He said that when he became the representative for the area in 1995, he wanted to make sure that there were libraries in all the communities.  Texaco/Chevron was immediately contacted through its Barbados Office and assisted by Mr. Jacobs, they were able to commence the new library at Deane-Glasford before the end of the year.

Minister Liburd noted that there was also a new library at the Cayon Primary School, one in the Conaree Community Centre and one would soon be completed in the Keys area.

The Parliamentary Representative for the area added that Chevron’s contribution would greatly aid the literacy of the students and their overall education.  He said that this would assist in their personal ambitions, enabling them to go on to succeed in whatever profession they chose.

The short ceremony was chaired by Mr. Calvin Martin, President of the Deane-Glasford Parents Teachers Association.  The Ministry of Education was represented by Ms. Constance Richardson.
