Chambalay to reignite community SPIRIT

Press Release

SANDY POINT, St. Kitts and Nevis, October 12th 2011 - Last year, somewhere in Sandy Point, a match was scratched, a flame borne and the light of Chambalay has only gotten bigger and brighter. This year, it is set to spread over the entire November 5 weekend with three fun-filled events for all!

Running in on the success of last year’s event, the community festival has returned for its second annual staging and has already been sending a buzz throughout the island. The event is organized by SPIRIT, the Sandy Point group which, just earlier this year, staged the nation’s biggest community festival, Black San Bang-A-Lang! And organizers are promising a bang for the buck!

'Chambalay is a cultural beacon which continues to illuminate our lives. It symbolizes our commitment to community development, and this year, we are pushing, with even greater passion, our youth and family agenda. Essentially, the event reignites the community SPIRIT,’’ recently-elected SPIRIT PRO Che-Raina Warner said.

SPIRIT’s recent thrust in grassroots youth events is evident in its all-day football exhibition brought to you in partnership with SPAFA. It kicks off as early as 8:00 A.M. November 5, and will run until in the evening, with a chance for everybody to get back onto the field or in some cases, give football a try for the first.

Pots and pans and buckets and bottles will meet the traditional iron and steel bands in an explosion promised to be bigger than last year’s! The street jam starts tuning up at the Sandy Point Recreation Ground from 6:30PM on Saturday, November 5, and the drumming rhythm and color will wind through the torch-lit streets of Sandy Point led by the brand new Chambalay troupe of merrymakers. This is a jam for everyone, so get your t-shirt, prepare your chambalay and join in the cultural excitement without delay!

The street jam of revelers, musicians and mock-jumbies culminates in the Sandy Point Hard Court for the first ever Guinness Street-Ball Challenge, which begins at 8:30 PM. If you think you are up for the challenge, get yourself a 7-member team, including a goal keeper, make sure they are all 18 years or older and be sure to contact Tristley Bassue, Head of SPIRIT's Sports, Health and Fitness Division at (869) 662 4200 or via email sandypointspirit@gmail.com. There will be plenty prizes and give-aways compliments Carib Breweries (SKN), so get there early and get involved!

The action does not end there! It continues on Sunday, November 6, with the community’s first ever Kart Part Olympics: a series of traditional games and sports waking up the silent back streets of Sandy Point and pulling together areas from Romney Ground to La Valle! Who will be the winner is yet to be seen but be sure to come out to view barefoot races, pitching, mississippi, the back-road marathon and even a chance to strike at the dunk-a-man tank!

'The Kart Part Olympics is the first of its kind to be tried in Sandy Point and I have no doubt in my mind that it will do much to bring the various communities closer. There is a chance of winning in at least one event for everyone, those who are athletic and those who don't mind having fun! The Kart Part Olympics gives Chambalay its real effect on the ground in building community pride,' Warner said.
