Mrs. Smith is serving as management officer. Her responsibilities, among other duties, include assisting the Director of the BVI London Office Mr. Kedrick Malone with political, diplomatic and promotional responsibilities, human resources, performance and budget management, general oversight and supervision of the office, its staff and special projects and in the director’s absence she will act in that capacity.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office Ms. Sandra Ward told the Department of Information and Public Relations the secondment programme, now in its fourth year, exposes officers to public service delivery within an international context.

“I have no doubt Mrs. Hodge-Smith will appreciate this opportunity to draw on her experiences as director of culture while gaining new perspectives,” Ms. Ward said, adding, “She has the right attitude and will benefit from an excellent and unforgettable experience working in the UK on behalf of our Territory.”

Ms. Ward said the skills gained from the secondment programme experience will add value to Mrs. Hodge-Smith’s public service career which will help us to achieve our objective of having a cadre of trained civil servants from which to draw when related positions become available.

Mrs. Smith has 18 years experience in the Public Service. She has served as an education officer for culture and has provided leadership and managed the Department of Culture from 2007 to present. She holds a master’s degree in Business Administration from Wright State University, Columbus, Ohio and a bachelor’s degree in Management from the College of St. Elizabeth, Morristown, New Jersey.

Since 2008, the Civil Service Secondment Programme has allowed public officers in the Virgin Islands to further develop themselves as professionals in the United Kingdom at the BVI London Office. It seeks to identify strong, talented individuals with excellent communication, research, reporting and team building skills.
