    BASSETERRE St.kitts, October 12th, 2011 -- The National Association of Administrative Professionals of St Kitts and Nevis (St Kitts Chapter) – NAAP - continued to celebrate its 30th anniversary by hosting the 3rdAnnual Imelda Wilkin NAAP Effective Speaking Competition on Tuesday, October 11th 2011 at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.

     

    The five competing secondary schools were Basseterre High School, Charles E Mills Secondary School, Immaculate Conception Catholic School, Verchilds High School and Washington Archibald High School.The competition was ably moderated by Ms Jacqueline Bryan – President of SKNYPA, and welcome remarks were made by Education Officer Mrs Urlene Bloice-Roberts. 

     

    She commented that the exercise provides stimulation for the minds of the young people who participate, and that naming the competition after NAAP’s co-founder Ms Imelda Wilkin was a fitting tribute for one who had been responsible for training many secretaries and administrative professionals throughout the federation over the past five decades.

     

    Attorney General and acting Minister of Education Hon. Patrice Nisbett delivered inspiring remarks to both the organisation and the students. He commended all the participants for the courage and determination they showed to take the bold decision to compete, as well as the teachers for helping the children.  He encouraged the students with pointers to help them succeed in school and in life and expressed the sincere hope that the Effective Speaking Competition would grow from strength to strength.

     

    The competition was divided into prepared and impromptu speeches with the topic for the prepared speeches being “Despite Increasing Competitiveness and Personal Development, the Standard of Professionalism Has Been Eroded”.   Both segments were keenly contested, but ultimately, Ms Candace Greene of the Washington Archibald High School emerged victorious. 

     

    Ms Greene was outstanding in both segments and received the prize for best speaker. This is the third time that Washington Archibald High School has won this competition, making them the only school so far to win.  In second place was the lone male participant, Mr Allaric Pennyfeather of Basseterre High School, and the other participants were Olumayowa Olujohungbe (Immaculate Conception), Devandra Daniel (Charles E Mills High School) and Shequon Bolus (Verchilds High School). 

     

    The winners of the competition received cash prizes for their efforts and all contestants received trophies and gifts of cellular phones, compliments LIME!  

     

    The Association would like to publicly express its gratitude to the officials for this event, judges Dr Janet Beeler, Ms Vaple Burt and Ms Yvette Herbert and time-keeper Ms Che-Raina Warner of SPIRIT. The vote of thanks was moved by NAAP’s guest for the celebrations, Ms Karlene Burgess from Jamaica, who is the President of the Caribbean Association of Administrative Professionals (CAAP). 

     

    She placed on record the Association’s gratitude to the following for their sterling contributions to the success of this event: Delisle Walwyn & Co Ltd (Gold Sponsor), ECCB, Royal Logistics Ltd, Eastern Caribbean Home Mortgage Bank, O D Brisbane & Sons, Ross University, Caribbean Credit Card Corp., Dr Bichara Sahely, LIME, Ashburry’s, Marshall’s Restaurant, High School Principals and Teachers.

     

    So far, NAAP’s celebrations have included a workshop for school-leavers preparing for the world of work, an excellent anniversary banquet and dance, a public speaking seminar, and a church service and brunch for its members. 

     

    The Association will continue to mark this 30th anniversary milestone with other activities during the month, including a community outreach project at the Cardin Home and a Food Fair which will takes place on Saturday 29th at the Ferry Terminal. 

     

    The Association thanks the general public for its unwavering support over the past 30 years and looks forward to celebrating many more years of “People, Productivity & Professionalism”.
