    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 12th, 2011  – The month of October has been designated as fire preparedness month by the Public Information and Education (PIE) Sub-committee of the National Disaster Management Council (NDMC).

    As part of a public education campaign, a number of audio and visual public service announcements, a Department of Disaster Management’s Focus programme, GIS Radio Report and publications will be produced and aired via the mass media in a continued effort to educate the public about the dangers of fires.

     

    “Fires are deadly and fire prevention lies in the hands of the individual, therefore the community always need to keep fire preparedness in mind,” Station Officer, Mr. Melvin Jeffers told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

     

    The Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Services (VIFRS) recently concluded their Annual Fire Safety Awareness Week, and as such, PIE is partnering with VIFRS to continue to educate the community on the dangers of fire, fire prevention and fire safety.

     

    “Fire preparedness is something that should be practiced daily and to have the entire month as fire preparedness month is a good reinforcement to the work we are doing on a continued basis,” Jeffers said.

     

    According to Jeffers fire preparedness is a community problem that requires a community response and everyone has a part to play to ensure that the fire risk is minimised within their household so collectively as a

     

    The NDMC is chaired by His Excellency the Governor and coordinates disaster preparedness and response readiness activities. Last month the committee focused on climate change and will raise public awareness on epidemics and accidents – land and sea in the next two months.

     

    The NDMC’s Public Information and Education sub-committee promotes public awareness of hazards and disasters through the dissemination of accurate and reliable information.
