BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN PREPARATION for the Sugar Mas celebrations which are just around the corner, this Saturday (Oct. 15) will see Basseterre transformed into a festive atmosphere as the 2011 Carnival launch takes place from 3:00 p.m. at Warner Park.
The event will kick off with a grand parade through the streets, complete with folklore troupes, awareness groups, Ronnie Rascal’s sound system, the Drum core and the display of last year’s winners, according to newly appointed Chairperson, Shannon Hawley.
She stated that the parade would climax at Bank Street followed by a ceremony at 6:00 p.m. where the National Carnival Committee would be officially introduced to the public, and the 2011 Sugar Mas 40-40 list of activities would be revealed.
The contestants for the National Queen Pageant whose names were recently released will also be introduced in person. They are Trevecia Adams, Desri Weekes, Jody Carter, Maryska O’Loughlin, Kaila Huggins and Verlyn Williams.
They would be followed by the introduction of the High School beauties in the run for the Miss Talented Teen title.
Carnival enthusiasts will also hear the slogan that was chosen for this year so that it can ring in their ears from now until January.
Hawley noted that there would be a number of performances by the reigning Calypso King –Pungwa, Junior Calypso King - Leonardo ‘Calypso Leo’ Robinson and Female Calypso Queen - Anastasia amongst others.
She added that there would be surprises from a number of J’Ouvert troupes and the preview of some carnival costumes.
The exciting National Carnival 40th Anniversary celebrations will take place from November 25 to January 3.
