ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 13th, 2011   – The Development Planning Unit (DPU) is joining its regional counterparts to celebrate Caribbean Statistics Day on Friday, October 14 under the theme, “Recognising the Essential Role of Statistics in the Development of the Caribbean Community”.

As part of the observance, DPU will host an open house at its office located on the third floor of the East Atrium of the Central Administration Building between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The public is encouraged to visit the department to learn more about how statistics affects personal and professional decisions and informs policy decision-making.

According to the Director of DPU Mr. Raymond Phillips, “The open house is an opportunity for us to promote the importance of statistics within the Territory and highlight the operations of the department as it relates to the collection and compilation of statistics.”

Mr. Phillips further explained that statistics is vital for making inferences on economic planning, policy decision-making and infrastructural development.

“It helps to determine the trends and measure the performance of various sectors of the Territory’s economy,” he added.

The objectives of observing Caribbean Statistics Day are to improve awareness of statistics; encourage and develop a culture of statistics; provide insights into the process of production of statistics; promote the use of statistics in a wide variety of areas; increase credibility in statistics produced and establish new partnerships in the development of statistics.
