CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - A building in which a group of young men from New Castle congregate was destroyed by fire last Monday night, February 18.

The building is located at Shaws within close proximity to the island main road.

According to one member of the group, the burning of the building may have been the act of an unscrupulous individual(s).

The young men, who chose not to be identified, told reporters on Friday that they had chosen to socialise in the building because they had no playfield or community centre. They complained that authorities believe they have ulterior motives when they congregate.

“We come together to play dominoes and cards. Whoever burnt the house, burnt our dominoes’ tables and radios and battery source,” said one of the youths.

They recalled that last year the Top Brass of the Nevis Division Police Force had held meetings with them where they expressed their

views. “Even though we were at loggerheads with them, we gave them our ideas and asked them to lobby the government so that we could have a playground,” one of the youngsters said.

The young men said recent meetings between them and the police have not been cordial.  Contacted for a comment, Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Nevis Division, Inspector Hilroy Brandy, said the youths’ meeting point has been of concern to business owners and residents of the area.

Inspector Brandy said the area where the burnt house is located is the gateway to Mount Nevis and, “Tourists being driven to Mount Nevis Hotel smell scent of marijuana. It is illegal to possess marijuana, regardless of the quantity.”

Inspector Brandy called on the youths to engage in gainful activities. He advised them to discuss their grievances and needs with their constituencies’ representatives and the relevant minister.
