ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, October 13th, 2011  – Students at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) today participated in the first general election to elect the ESHS Executive Student Council which will govern during the 2011-2012 school year.

This signifies an important step forward in learning the democratic process as today’s election was the first for the ESHS since they were renamed from the BVI High School in April 2007. Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Andrew A. Fahie said that he is glad that the ESHS executive council has been revitalized and he welcomes this step as “it shows we encourage a democratic society whereby we can sensitise our students on the importance of voting and allow them to understand the issues, process, and its significance. This is truly moving from Good to Great.”

Assistant Principal with responsibility for pastoral affairs Mrs. Donna Clyne-Thomas said that this is an exciting time for the school as they prepare students with an education that incorporates real life scenarios. Mrs. Clyne-Thomas said that the exercise was very necessary for the student body.

“It is very important for them to be a part of and sensitised to the reality of elections and we want students to be familiar with the profession and procedure of elections. It was a learning experience that taught students the significance of having a voice in the decision making process,” the assistant principal stated.

The entire ESHS student population voted today for the members of the Executive Council which comprises a president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary and public relations officer.

Polling stations were erected for this exercise and each student presented the ‘presiding officers’ with a copy of their identification card that was checked against the ‘voter’s list’ to ensure eligibility.

After receiving instructions from the presiding officers, students took their ballots to the booths to cast their vote for their choice of candidate in each of the five positions. To accommodate the high student population, voting was also conducted in the homeroom classes.

On October 11, students voted for the form representatives who together with the executive council will comprise the student council governing body. Voters selected candidates only from their forms.

The ESHS student council is a group of highly motivated students who strive to improve the school’s environment through exemplary leadership and dedication. These include preparing and participating in school sponsored events and activities, involvement in a leadership portfolio, providing active class input and exhibiting a winning attitude.

The Ministry of Education and Culture supports hands-on learning experiences that stimulate growth and development of a rounded student population.
