Seventh Day Adventist celebrates 6th "100 Days at School”

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ONE hundred balloons were released into the ‘heavens’ this afternoon (Monday) by Kindergarten students of the Seventh Day Adventist School in commemoration of their “100 Day Celebration”.

SKNVibes arrived on the scene minutes before the actual release took place and experienced the excitement which was printed on the children’s faces. Children, some of whom were wearing green T-shirts bearing the words “We Shout out Loud, We gladly say, Happy Happy 100th Day” assembled in the schoolyard anxiously awaiting the event.

In the forefront of the gathering were students of the school’s two Kindergarten classes bedecked in uniforms of members of society including, nurses, chefs, police officers, doctors and firemen.   ~~Adz:Right~~

The countdown began, at the end of which the white and purple coloured balloons, which were suspended on strings held by the eager lads and lasses, drifted towards the heavens. Euphoric shouts filled the air as the balloons drifted towards the island’s capital.

In a brief interview with a teacher of one of the two Kindergarten classes in the school, Beverly Supersaud, she told SKNVibes what the “100 Day Celebration” signifies.

Supersaud expressed that while surfing the internet one day, she recognised that schools in the United States of America celebrated 100 days of school (which is 100 school days since the commencement of a new school year) and thought it was a good idea; one which could be imposed at her school. She further explained that since 2003, the event has been celebrated at the Seven Day Adventist School; the only learning institution on the island to have done so.

As part of this year’s celebration, upstanding members of the community were invited to deliver speeches to the children. But in keeping with the “100” theme, they were required to limit their speeches to either 100 words or 100 seconds.

Other activities, as Supersaud explained, included the collection of 100 similar objects and the writing of names in a “100 grid” to see how many times those particular names could be written in the said grid.

Friends, parents, well-wishers and businesses supported this year’s celebration and, according to Supersaud, this support was what propelled the event into the success it was.

She said that, also in keeping with the theme, a business card was collected from 100 businesses across the island and where possible, the businesses donated 100 samples of their products. And as a challenge, the children were encouraged to wear clothing indicative of their aspirations.

Resulting from the school/businesses collaboration, 50 hot lunches were distributed to elderly citizens in the community and, as the Kindergarten teacher explained, it is hoped that 50 food baskets would be handed out shortly.

The “100 Day Hall of Fame” was yet another highlight of the celebration. It featured the handiwork of the students.
Supersaud hailed the event a success and suggested it could be one that other learning institutions in the Federation can participate in.
