BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS-THE Young Leaders of Verchilds High School and students of the Special Education Unit (SEU) enjoyed the successful launching of the K.I.D.S. (Kindness In Donation and Services) program on Tuesday.
Students from both schools mingled successfully at the launch party held at the Verchilds High School, partaking of food as well as indulging in activities, entertainment, poetry and music.
Sherima Richards, Public Relations Officer for K.I.D.S., said that “the event was very successful” and that students from both schools really had fun.
“Even though the launch party was intended to merely be a meet-and-greet for the SEU and K.I.D.S., the excitement of the event drew in several students of VHS who happen to be passing by.
They were singing songs and talking to the children from the SEU. It was better than we could have hoped,” Richards said.
K.I.D.S. is a social outreach organization that was conceived and developed by students participating in the Verchilds Young Leaders program, themed this year as “Bridging the Gap: Building Relationships for a Better Tomorrow.”
In addition to the launch party, K.I.D.S. plans to organize many more events with and for the SEU over the next two months, such as a Cut & Shave styling party at the SEU, local fundraisers, and even television/radio appearances.
Richards said that the group hopes to raise enough funds to buy the SEU some playground equipment and toys, but the ultimate goal is “to bridge the gap between children with disabilities and special needs and the rest of society… [while] fostering a better understanding of the rights and needs of both groups.”
