BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE twin-island Federation’s security forces have realised yet another success in their quest to rid the streets of illegal firearms, ammunition and controlled drugs.

A police press release dated February 28, 2008 informs that during two separate exercises conducted in St. Kitts, a firearm and a quantity of drugs were found and taken into police custody.

The security forces, as the release explains, were “conducting operations” in Sandy Point when approximately 160 marijuana plants were discovered. These plants were discovered growing in a
.380 pistol with 4 rounds of ammunition and quanity of cannabis
cane-field located in the Bourke’s area.

While no street value was included in the release, it stated that the plants ranged in height from four inches to two feet.

“Investigations are continuing since no one was held responsible for the find.”

Relative to the gun find, the release states that on Thursday, at about 9:00 in the morning, police officers were in the Old Road area on “routine patrol” when Bernel Viera, a 24-year-old Half Way Tree resident, was seen in the River Side area.

Other information provided is that Viera attempted to disperse from the area when approached by the officers, but failed in his bid.

He was successfully stopped and searched, and on his person, the release informs, a .380 pistol, a magazine and four rounds of ammunition were found; all of which were in his “pant waist”.  A quantity of marijuana was also found on his person.

“The weapon, ammunition along with Viera and the drugs were taken into police custody,” the release added. However, it did not state whether or not charges were preferred against Veira.

This find brings to eight, the number of illegal firearms taken off the streets for the year.
