Press Release

ROADTOWN TortolaBVI, October 18th, 2011  – The Deputy Governor’s Office is informing the public that Remembrance Day will be celebrated on November 13 and Poppy Appeal will begin on October 23 and conclude on November 12.

Remembrance Day service will be held at the Road Town Methodist Church on November 13 at 9:30 a.m. All uniformed organisations and ex-service men and women are invited to participate. His Excellency the Governor, the Premier and other public officers will also participate.

In an effort to recognise all service men and women in the Territory at the service, ex-service men and women are invited to register with the Deputy Governor’s Office by providing information on their time of service, branch of service, country served and any special medals received by November 4.

This can be done by telephoning Mrs. Gerda Frett at 468-3701 extension 2350.
Members of the public are also invited to attend the Remembrance Day Service on November 13 and are encouraged to purchase poppies and to wear them on that day.

Remembrance Day is celebrated annually to focus our attention on those service men and women who gave their lives that we may continue to live in freedom and democracy.

Poppy and Remembrance Sunday, was started by servicemen and women to make sure later generations never forgot the suffering caused by the 1914-1919 World War. The wearing of poppies on Remembrance Day has become more than a tribute to the dead. It is also a symbol of remembrance, compassion and caring for all victims of war.
